Condylomata

Condylomata are anogenital warts caused by the Human Papilloma Virus. (HPV)  They are sexually transmitted.  Before proliferation of the condylomata the HPV may be dormant within the cells for weeks, months or years.  The exact time of infection can therefore not be determined with certainty.  There are more than 100 serotypes of HPV with varying degrees of aggressiveness or minor involvement.  Topical agents applied in the office can resolve the warts.  However, if there is extensive involvement, especially within the anal canal, surgical destruction of the warts, or a minor outpatient procedure is warranted.  Recurrence rate after therapy is related to the serotype strain and the patient’s immune status.  A surveillance program will be established after destruction of the warts.  If the condylomata are not treated, they usually will continue to proliferate extensively and occasionally turn to cancer.
